Frequently asked questions
Does rent control apply to my unit?
It depends on your city, building age, and property type. Use the lookup tool to find the rules for your location.
What is the difference between AB 1482 and local rent control?
AB 1482 is the statewide cap (5% + CPI, max 10%). Other cities have stricter local ordinances. When local law is stricter, it takes priority.
What does CPI mean?
Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation. Most rent increase formulas are tied to it, which is why the maximum allowable increase changes each year.
Are single-family homes covered?
Under AB 1482, they may be exempt if owned by a natural person with proper written notice. Most local ordinances do not cover them.
How often is this site updated?
Rates are updated when cities publish new figures, typically once a year when new CPI data is available.
